House Republican James Comer: 'Minnesota is not your normal state'

3 min read

That's it, the title is the post. I really can't conceive of much else that could be said that's not just a string of confused punctuation marks. From Aaron Rupar:

Comer's latest attack on Tim Walz: "Minnesota is not your normal state ... you have a huge population of residents in Minnesota that have come from other countries and have very different ideologies that don't really respect capitalism."

"Minnesota is not your normal state ... you have a huge population of residents in Minnesota that have come from other countries and have very different ideologies that don't really respect capitalism."

That's mouldering chardonnay grape James Comer, the House Republican who's devoted his thoroughly unearned perch as House Oversight Committee chairman to now push a new conspiracy theory to Fox 'Business" (lol): "WALZ LIVED IN CHINA FOR A YEAR," shouts the chyron as James Comer describes vice presidential candidate Gov. Tim Walz' state of Minnesota as not one of those real American states, like South Toesuck or wherever James thinks he's from, but a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Watch out for those folks in Minnesota, is the new Republican message. They don't really respect capitalism. It's a mad wasteland where the government feeds hungry children and your friends might just show up at your house with something called a "hotdish," God help us all.

They're trying to make this a theme, by the way. Comer was pushing it a few days ago with Replacement Tucker Carlson:

But in this case Comer was taking a break from "what if Tim Walz is a secret Communist spy and it is Donald Trump, who launched a coup against the government, who is the patriot" to once again just crib stuff straight-up from his party's weird-ass flanks. Minnesota is "not your normal" state, because people there come from other countries and therefore haven't pledged to lay down the lives of themselves, their pets and their children to the holy god of gods, "capitalism," in the same way that James Comer imagines his own Habsburg-Americans do.

Most common ancestries in Minnesota statisticalatlas.com/state/Minnes... are... pretty similar to Wisconsin statisticalatlas.com/state/Wiscon..., a key swing state. More people of Norwegian and Swedish ancestry in MN, but German plurality in both

You might assume that Comer is talking about his party's usual targets: Muslim Americans and anyone who's migrated to the state from any latitude south of Oklahoma City-ish.

That'd be a good guess except that Actually, the MAGA world has been going off about the un-Umerican nature of Minnesota since the moment Tim Walz was picked for the vice presidential slot. And their concerns are ... broader.

Oh, you betcha. Take a wrong turn in Minnesota and boom, all of a sudden you might find yourself in a no-go zone and subject to Swedish law. What are you gonna do then, hmm?

It's been plain that the majority of Trump's base is quite certain that most of their neighbors are not "real" Americans, and that's been the reason that Republican voters have continued to be supportive of their party's efforts to overthrow the government rather than respect any democratic outcome that doesn't leave them in charge. The current government is illegitimate because it does include people who are Not Them.

But few if any of them understand how truly small fascism's list of us is, compared to its list of them. The list of "real" citizens consists solely of whoever Dear Leader's closest gaggle thinks it is, and unless you have about a billion dollars or so to prove your Americanness you'd better damn well hope that none of your well-armed, free-to-run-wild neighbors think your last name is one of the problematic ones.

All of that said? Sure, go nuts with that, Comer. Please broadcast your theory that people from Minnesota aren't "normal" Americans far and wide. Make it a cornerstone of your Fox News talking points. If there's other states you want to throw in that pile—Michigan and Wisconsin come to mind?—then toss away.

It's impressive how Comer is able to move so quickly from being certain that Joe Biden is the source of all American corruption to realizing it was Kamala Harris all along to then discovering that no, it was Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz who was the sleeper agent primed and ready to destroy us. What a keen analytic mind this mouldering grape has stuffed inside it. He is the Sherlock Holmes of our times.
