Finally, some good news for a change: Susan Crawford has handily beat far-right Brad Schimel to re-solidify the Wisconsin Supreme Court's 4-3 liberal majority. And it happened despite Elon Musk dumping millions into the race to elect her opponent while seemingly breaking state laws with abandon.
Tuesdayâs election was the first statewide race in the country since Trump won the presidency last fall. Trump narrowly won Wisconsin and in counties across the state, Schimel failed to match the presidentâs vote total in counties across the state. In La Crosse County, Crawford performed 11 points better than Harris did last year and Schimel didnât even match Trumpâs vote share in his home of Waukesha County. [...]
The 2025 Wisconsin Supreme Court race set the record for the most expensive judicial campaign in U.S. history, topping the $100 million mark. While Crawford received support from liberal billionaires including George Soros and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Musk dwarfed all other contributors, dumping more than $20 million into the race.
That's pocket change for Musk, but he still appears to have spent much of the money in ways that look ... really illegal? Some of it went into $100 payments to anyone willing to sign a petition meant to boost Schimel's chances and to two million-dollar checks handed out to connected Republican activists in what appears to be another rigged (illegal!) faux-lottery by Musk; we'll see if Wisconsin has the guts to indict Musk for any or all of that, putting a stop to his craven and crooked pattern of Lotto Politics.
It seems obviousâto anyone but Elonâthat Musk's visibility in the race probably hurt Schimel far more than his cash might have helped. Musk is currently one of the most visibly hated people in America, thanks to his incompetent and thoroughly corrupt leadership of "DOGE"s moves to destroy large and critical parts of the federal government. He's a liar, a con man, a thief, a scoundrel, a promoter of white supremacy and neo-Nazi voices and, if his recent behavior is anything to go by, quite possibly drugged out of his gourd during any given public appearance.
For all those reasons and others, Wisconsin voters came out in droves to tell him to bug off. Good. Keep it up.
